Rexburg is a small town in the Idaho Panhandle, located near Boise. The population was 5,381 at the 2010 census. It lies on the banks of the Snake River and is known for its heavy industry, including a major aluminum smelter. The town started out as a small settlement called Mechanicsville in 1882 by George H. Meeker and his family. In 1907, it became an incorporated municipality with a population of 3,000. The primary industries in Rexburg during this time were agriculture and manufacturing; however, the town's growth stopped during World War II when most production shifted to other parts of the country. Since then, Rexburg has seen several transformations: It became an educational center in the early 21st century; it was renamed after President Harry S Truman in 2006; and it hosted the first United States Open Tennis Championships in 2008. Today,Rexburg is home to several businesses such as AT&T Wireless (now Verizon Wireless), Ford Motor Company (Ford Field), PepsiCo (Pepsi Center) and numerous restaurants and stores that cater to its growing population.

In 1959, Rexburg voters passed a ordinance designating Ramsar Site 8240 as a world heritage site honoring "the exceptional natural and cultural history of the Arête des Neiges region" located near Rexburg and Hinton, British Columbia (now part of Vancouver). In 1984, Rexsburg voters approved annexation of neighboring Hinton to make it one municipality with a population over 1,000 residents for the first time in its history; this annexation has since been repealed due to lack of revocability from that date onward within municipalities with populations over 1,000 residents. The city manager position has been held by Blaine Boren since 2002 when he took office following Mayor Tom Silver's resignation effective November 3rd 2001 due to health reasons
