In 1962-1964Rexburg experienced another significant change when it became one of several towns within Iowan County that were made associated with that county's new government; this change helped create a more unified community across all levels of government which has continued into today. Although Rexburg has been struggling recently with dwindling employment opportunities and decreasing social support services available to its residents, there are still many positive aspects to this small town’s history including its numerous festivals (both traditional and modern), unique architecture which can be found nowhere else on Earth outside of America’s Midwestern region (including two examples of commercial buildings built specifically for festivals), as well as some very talented local citizens who have played important roles within their communities over time.
Rexburg was founded in 1887 by George Rex, who named it for his home state of Idaho. The town is located about an hour south of Boise, the capital of Idaho, on the Rexburg-Boise County line. It has a population of around 507 today and grew rapidly after its incorporation as a city in 1907. The first store in Rexburg was built on Main Street in 1907 by J.C. Goodrich and brothers. That same year, the first school was opened in the town, which became known as "the best school in town." In 1916, Rexsburg annexed acreage north of its current downtown to form what is now called North Park. In 1925, Rexburg began annexing adjacent communities including South Park and East Park to become what is now known as Downtown Rexburg. In 1939, it completed construction of its first library - which remains one of the most popular tourist attractions in the town today. During World War II,Rexburg took on an important role as a munitions plant for the war effort – producing thousands of tons of ammunition that helped support Allied troops throughout Europe. In 1966, following passage of legislation creating Boise's metropolitan area – which included Rexburg – downtown business owners decided to move their operations out into new buildings at Sixth Avenue and State Street instead of keeping them inside the old city limits where they had been since 1907 (and where most businesses still remain today). This change helped make DowntownRexsburg one of Boise's most vibrant areas and continue its growth during subsequent decades; becoming one of Boise's key economic engines through successive wavesof annexation and development until it surpassed City Hall in size only two years ago (2015).
