Rexburg is a small town in the U.S. state of Idaho and is the county seat for Benewah County. The population was 5,294 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Snake River near its confluence with the Boise River. The first permanent settler in what is now Rexburg was George Aiken, who arrived in 1885 and named it after his home town of Rexton, England. Aiken's son, John Aiken, founded an agricultural co-operative in 1905 which became known as Benewah Valley Farms. In 1907, Geo Wadding purchased land east of Rexburg from John Aiken and developed it into what is now I-5 Corridor Business Park. Rexburg grew slowly until World War II when it began to explode with growth due to military activity and new jobs created by aircraft manufacturing plants nearby at Lewiston and Coeur d'Alene. The population reached 14,000 by 1950 and soon had outgrown downtown areas such as Main Street and Fourth Street. In 1955, Rexburg formed a city government which included a mayor and four council members; however, only two were ever elected to full term because of term limits set by the state legislature at that time). During the 1960sRexburgh experienced rapid growth due to both its strategic location within Benewah County as well as American Honda's plant outside Council Bluffs which produced Acclaim models from 1966 through 1978 (the last year production took place at this plant before they closed down). This growth led to increased traffic congestion on main streets including Fourth Street where many businesses were forced to close their doors during rush hour because there was not enough room for them all on one side of the street! In order to accommodate this growing population density many businesses built highrise buildings or converted older warehouses into apartments which can still be seen today along 3rd Avenue between Lincoln Boulevard and Interstate 15 (known locally as "Hollywood Row"). One such building which remains standing today is Hotel Benewah (formerly called The Marriott) located on Third Avenue between Lincoln Boulevard and Interstate 15 just south of where I-5 Corridor Business Park once stood - another reminder that even during hard times some things never change in Rexsburg!
Rexburg was founded in 1887 by John D. Rockefeller and his brother, Edwin. Rexburg was named for the Roman city ofRemus, which Rockefeller had visited as a boy. The town's first store opened in 1889. In 1905, Rexburg became the site of the world's first oil well; the well was drilled by Standard Oil Company. The town began to grow rapidly during World War I, when it became an important military base for the war effort. After the war, Rexburg experienced a growth spurt that continued through the 1930s and 1940s. During this time, many major businesses moved to Rexburg from other parts of Idaho and Wyoming due to its booming economy. In 1957, Rexburg became an independent city and adopted its current name.
