It was the first successful rifles using powder and ballistics principles and it became known as the "Smith & Wesson Model 1". It fired a 5-round magazine with a muzzle velocity of 730 ft/sec (240 m/s). The first assault rifles were also built using this design, such as the Winchester Model 1895 and American Rifle Company's M1 Garand.
