In the early 1800s, Post Falls was a small town in central Idaho with only a few residents. The local rifle scopes were made by several different companies, most notably William Fenton and Sons. One of the first rifles to be imported into the United States was an English model of the 1810 Enfield Rifle. This rifle was used for military purposes and required a magnification of at least 2x to be effective. During World War I, Post Falls became an important munitions production center due to its location on the Boise River. After the war, many factories closed down in Central Idaho and Post Falls experienced economic decline until it regained some prominence as a bedroom community during the late 1990s through 2000s. In recent years, Post Falls has seen steady growth as an attraction for tourists and businesses alike due to its rich history and now vibrant culture.
Post Falls, Idaho is a small town in the Boise metropolitan area. The population was 24,083 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Post Falls– Eagle Lake–Glacier County, ID., combined statistical area. The Salmon River forms its eastern border and the Boise Valley lies to its west. The first Europeans to visit Post Falls were Jedediah Smith and his party in 1808. In 1847, postmaster general James K. Polk sent an expedition up the Salmon River to explore potential new routes for mail trains through central Idaho and Oregon. When they reached Post Falls, they discovered what had been called by them "the most beautiful river in America." They named it for General George Armstrong Custer's army that had destroyed Indian resistance east of the Rockies during the Mexican-American War (1846-48). The people of Post Falls started trading with India as early as 1853. A group of men from Post Falls organized a flour mill in 1865 and began marketing their flour throughout eastern Idaho and western Montana Territory. By 1870, they had built a large mill near what is now downtown Post Falls on Big Hole Creek. From this mill, they exported flour all over western North America before closed down in 1916 by World War I regulations banning exports of foodstuffs to Germany based on that country's involvement in World War I (1914-18). In 1907, when Gold Rush fever struck southwest Idaho about 10 miles northeast of Post Falls, many people decided to move there because of access to gold fields; however some did not find enough gold until after assayments became available from 1902 onwards - making it one of the earliest gold rush towns in America! The first post office was established at Post Falls on November 12th 1847 by Capt Robert Hutton with Alfred Schieffer as agent; it served until 1861 when it was moved to Dashiellsburg which later became Lewiston but still remains part of Pforzheimer County today due to its location within Census Tract 222!

The city was named for postmaster General John Post and the falls were created by the construction of the Post Falls Dam in 1933. The area now known as Post Falls was first populated by the Athapaskan people, who came to the region about 10,000 years ago. The town was founded in 1865 by a group of Idaho Territorial soldiers led by General George Armstrong Custer. The city was named after General Custer's home county, Montana. In 1887, Post Falls became the capital of Oregon Territory and remained so until 1907 when it moved to Boise. By 1912, Post Falls had become an agricultural center with over 120 farms and cattle ranching operations. The population increased rapidly during World War I due to the production of munitions at nearby Tonopah Arsenal. Many farmers left for California in search of jobs in that war-time boomtown. After the war ended, many returned to Post Falls and continued agriculture; however, some new businesses arrived such as a bank and a hospital in the early 1920s. In 1935, Post Falls became an incorporated city under section 8 of the Idaho Constitution.
