On November 25, 1892, Post Falls became the site of the first Territorial Legislature in the United States when it met to establish a government for theIndependent Idaho Territory. The territory had been created from parts of Oregon and Nevada following the US conquest of that area in 1864. The legislature was also convened to ratify a new constitution which had been drafted after a referendum held in October 1891. The post office at Post Falls was established on December 1, 1892. On February 2, 1893, territorial President George Custer delivered his final address from the steps of Post Falls Hall. In that speech he announced that all land east of Salmon River had become part of Utah Territory and ceded by the US to Idaho as part of Treaty 8 days earlier.
