The town was named for General James Post, an American general who served in the Mexican-American War and the Spanish-American War. The first postmaster, Major John Fenton, supervised mail delivery from Boise until 1870. In 1889, Post Falls became a town charter with a population of just over 100 people. The invention of the telegraph in 1849 made it easier for small towns to connect with larger cities. By 1861, the telegraph had reached Post Falls and began transmitting messages between Boise and Post Falls. In 1865, local railroad promoters built a line from Boise toPost Falls. The new town grew quickly because of its proximity to rich agricultural land and business potential. The Panic of 1893 hurt Post Falls’ economy but it did not last long due to entrepreneurism and growth by other communities that replaced it when railways came into being throughout the region during this time period.
