Pocatello is a small town in the Idaho Panhandle located about 20 miles northeast of Boise. The population was 3,584 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pocatello-Lackawanna County, ID Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to reside in what is now Pocatello were Native American Indians who called it "Gwadigo." At some point, European explorers and traders discovered this area and named it after Mount Pocatoosa in Alabama. In 1864, John C. Fremont explored and mapped the Boise River Valley and discovered a mining district near present-day Pocatello. He proposed that this be designated as the new silver rush country. The first silver discoveries were made in 1868 on land that would eventually become known as the ghost town of Silver City. By 1870, Silver City had become an important transportation center for settlers moving into the new territory of Idaho panhandle from Oregon and California. In 1886, several hundredesteaders founded what became known as Rexford around what is now downtown Pocatello. They began irrigating crops and raising livestock on their own land using water obtained from nearby rivers such as Clearwater and Snake Creek. Rexford was later renamed after Wm Henson, founder of Jardine & Henson Railway which ran through town between 1907 and 1912; one of its main lines served Rexford until its closure in 1970s due to financial difficulties. A local school was established here in 1903 by Mrs.(Fannie) Ewing (1860-1940). Mrs.(Fannie) Ewing organized a school board with seven members who met every day to teach students grades 1-8 from early morning until late afternoon; during these classes there was no televisions or other distractions for students except for playground games which lasted until sunset! On October 7th 1923, Mrs.(Fannie) Ewing died suddenly at age 96 years young due to a heart attack while playing checkers with her children at home – thus beginning an era where education played an important role in our community’s social life!
