The first post office was established in Pocatello on July 6, 1860. In 1865, George Washington Carleton arrived in Pocatello with his army and set up his headquarters here. He became interested in agriculture and began building up an experimental farm near present-day North Avenue and State Street. In 1867, he donated land for a public school system which still flourishes today. By 1870, over 50 businesses had been established in Pocatello; many continue to operate today including two banks (the First National Bank and American Savings & Loan) as well as several stores such as Joplin's General Store and Brownell's grocery store which are all still open today. In 1907, an electric power plant was built near what is now North Avenue and State Street; this led to increased industry development within townhall district #2 which included becoming one of the few communities in America without any streetcar service during that time period! After World War II ended however, industrial production took off leading to more density within townhall district #2 resulting in decline for many businesses within that district over time until they finally closed or relocated elsewhere after being unable compete against newyork based companies who had economies of scale at their disposal due to Federal subsidies given during those years! The growth rates throughout much of recent decades have allowed much smaller businesses/cities like Boise (population 14 million) while completely impactuating larger ones such as Reno Nevada with its 300% increase over its current population (!), resulted not just because people chose rural towns instead but also because Interstate 20 bypassed most eastern Idaho so home prices outside city limits skyrocketed making these areas incredibly expensive compared to nearby suburbs!
