Nampa, Idaho is a small town in the Snake River Valley of central Idaho. The population was 1,354 at the 2010 census. It is located on the border of Nampa and Caldwell counties. The first people to inhabit what is now Nampa were American Indians who lived near the confluence of the Snake and Salmon Rivers in what is now Nampa County. European settlers began arriving in 1847, when a party led by Mormon apostle George Smith established a mission at present-day Nampa. By 1857, there were over 100 Anglo-Americans living in Nampa County. In 1861, due to increasing tensions between America's two main races over slavery and Reconstruction efforts in the Southern United States, an all-white militia detachment known as "The White Knights" was organized to suppress Native American raids along the Snake River Plain. In 1865, Congress passed An Act to Allocate Lands for Public School Districts within Jackson County (now Caldwell) which included part of present-day Nampa County. The district was named after James Kapp (1811–1868), one of its founders and Mayor of Boise from 1859 until his death in 1860. The school district opened on October 15, 1865 with 3 students and $5 per student budgeted for instruction; it served 10 students before disbanding in 1870 due to budget cuts caused by inflationary measures introduced by President Ulysses S. Grant during his second term as president). In 1867, construction began on what would become Centennial Hall; this building served as the county courthouse from 1889 until 1907 when it was replaced by a new courthouse built on Main Street which still stands today (). Centennial Hall also served as home to local newspapers beginning in 1889 until they moved out into their own buildings around 1925 (). Today Centennial Hall remains a popular tourist attraction that can be visited during daylight hours only (). Other early pioneers who made significant contributions to Nampa include Cushman Waddell (born about 1840), who developed land north of town and founded Battle Creek Brewery (); John Waddell (1851–1926), founder/owner/operator of Jordon Creamery (), Elisha Dickinson () and Alfred Hitchcock (), both actors., Samuel Harkness () became one of history's most successful businessmen (); Asa Gray (), an early settler who operated an onion farm near town; Arapaho Chief Yakima Warfield ('Yakima' being an anglicized version of his tribal name) ; Lewis & Clark Expedition commander Meriwether Lewis 'Lew' Davy (); Reuben Roosevelt (); president Franklin D.
