Nampa was founded by fur traders in 1849 as a trading post on the Snake River system. In 1862 it became the capital of Idaho Territory. It was renamed Nampa in 1912 after Gen. Nelson A. Miles, Jr., who had been its first governor and later the 28th president of Idaho Territory. As part ofpost-World War II suburban growth, Nampa lost much of its original character and now has a small business district and several housing developments built around it. According to the 2000 census, there are also four churches in town: oneMethodist, two Lutheran, and oneAssemblies of God (AOG). The community is located on U.S Route 191 just east of Interstate 84 Exit 173B which leads south to Caldwell and north to Salmon Lake
