In 1951, Mayor Harry Hutton proclaimed October 10th "World Oil Day" in memory of Father John Deasy who had been instrumental in developing oil industry activity adjacent to Nemur Creek during early years of petroleum exploration in this area; today that day remains an important holiday for local businesses and individuals involved with energy production within or near town limits

Nampa is a city in Butte County, Idaho, United States. The population was 13,030 at the 2010 census. Nampa is the county seat of Butte County and home to the University of Idaho. The town began as a farming community in 1875 on the east bank of Payette River about 12 miles (19 km) south-southwest of Boise. It was named for General George Armstrong Custer, who had fought in the Mexican-American War and then been commandant of Fort Laramie near Nampa. A post office called Nampa was established in 1876, and remained in operation until 1907. In 1902, an oil well was drilled by J P Morgan & Co., located 3 miles (4 km) northeast of town on Wells Fork Road. The well proved successful and production quickly increased; by 1905 Nampa had become one of the leading centers for petroleum production in northeastern Idaho. In 1909, organized religion began to play a role in local politics; when Judge John H Ewing became mayoralty candidate against incumbent Harry A Sivert, he refused to swear allegiance to the new Mormon Church because its practices were not sanctioned by his church hierarchy. In 1912–13, during World War I,[1] Nampas saw its first major military action when troops from nearby Butte arrived to help fight against Native American militants known as the Paiute Wars.[2][3] After hostilities ended on July 4th 1918,[4] most combat veterans re-settled here while their units returned home;[5][6] although some small businesses continued operations until 1924,[7][8] Nampa's heyday as a commercial center came to an end with world war II.[9][10] However, due to various factors such as strategic location withinrethorps Interstate 85 and easy access to transportation including both trucking routes into Boise and car rental services available year round,[11][12][13]) many businesses have continued up through today’s economy including: Albertsons grocery store chain(),[14], KFC restaurant (), Starbucks Coffee (), Bellingham Restaurant (), Jack In The Box (). Today there are over 60 businesses dotting downtown streets with over 1 million square feet (100 m²) leased or rented out annually!

The name Nampa is taken from the Assiniboine Sioux word naraha meaning "to make fire." Nampa was founded in 1887 by Judge John D. Rockefeller and his brother-in-law James Wickersham as a small Native American trading post on the Snake River between Nampa and Rexburg. In 1898, Rockefeller donated 4,000 acres (1 km²) of land to be the county seat of Clearwater County. In 1916, Nampa became an incorporated town with a population of around 1,500 people.
