The first gun target in Mountain Home was built in 1903. It was a one-shot Annie Oakley rifle silhouette target. The next year, the town built its first pistol range, which allowed people to shoot handguns. In 1916, the town also erected a two-story shooting tower. That same year, the Idaho Territorial Legislature passed an act allowing owners of firearms to keep them for personal protection purposes. The following year, the town erected a three-story building for the use of local law enforcement officers and their families. By 1923, rifle targets had been replaced by pistols at the range and in 1924, shotguns were added to the mix. The building served as both a shooting gallery and police station until it was torn down in 1989. Gun ranges continued to be constructed throughout Mountain Home until after World War II when they were replaced by hunting or golf courses. In 1892, a man named John D. Rockefeller donated land to the city of Mountain Home for what is now known as the Mountain Home Rifle Range. The rifle range was first opened in 1896 and has been in use ever since. In 1934, the NRA bought the range from the city and continues to operate it today.
Mountain Home is a small town in the Snake River Valley of Idaho, located about 60 miles (96 km) east of Boise and 20 miles (32 km) north of Pocatello. The population was 1,514 at the 2000 census. The town began as a farming community in the early 1800s, when land grants were given to families who settled in what is now Mountain Home. In 1904, the first post office was established here; it continued to serve until 1959. The town's first store opened in 1907. By 1912, local farmers had developed a watermill that produced flour for local grocery stores and other businesses; by 1925, the mill had been sold and used for storage purposes. The store closed in 1957 but reopened as a restaurant in 1967. In 1902, builders John Crain and James Ritchie built an unfinished cabin on what is now the site of Mountain Home High School; it was completed two years later and served as the school's first classroom. In 1909, J H Smith donated land to become home to Mountain Home Masonic Lodge #2; it continued to operate until 1963. That same year, Mountain Home became part of Rice County when it was organized from parts of Salmon and Storey Counties. In 1933, Roy Carlson purchased 3 blocks east of Main Street from Lillian Olson for $25 per acre ($700 at current values). Carlson founded Castleberry Farms which grew corn and beans for local restaurants and sold produce door-to-door. His heirs continue to run Castleberry Farms today with over 70 employees worldwide; production includes corn ethanol fuel blending products as well as fresh fruit/vegetables/processing plants across seven states along I-5 near Denver CO

This makes sense because Bows and Arrows are easier to control than Firearms while they still offer a lot of potential damage potential (albeit limited). Additionally, pistols have been around for far longer than rifles which means there are more examples of them being used in target practice (and therefore more opportunities for research into how they work). Finally, pistols have a higher fire rate than rifles so it’s not surprising that they have been extensively researched for their ability to achieve accurate results on pistol targets.
