Mountain Home, Idaho is a small town in the Snake River Valley of eastern Idaho. It is located at the confluence of the Salmon and Boise Rivers. The population was 1,898 as of 2010. When the U.S. Post Office moved to Caldwell in 1889, Mountain Home became its main mailing point for residents of surrounding areas including Nampa and Pocatello. The early settlers were drawn to the fertile valley floor that stretched below them and its abundant water resources; they built irrigated farms and erected mills that produced flour, cottonseed oil, lumber, cheese, wheat flour and other products for local markets. In 1906 Mountain Home became an incorporated municipality with a Mayor-Clerk form of government under which it continued to operate until 1959 when it joined the new Ada County Municipality within Ada County but remained a separate civil institution with its own police department and fire department until 1985 when both departments were merged into one entity under a single mayor-council system ruled by a five-member body known as the "Mayor's Committee on Fire Services." In 1990 City Hall was replaced by a new facility designed by architect Edward Jurewicz which continues to serve as Mountain Home's civic center today. According to2010 census data*, Mountain Home has an estimated population of 2,521 making it ranking seventh largest in Ada Countybehind only Moscow (3,906), Boise (2,911), Nampa (1,968), Anadarko (1,901) and Payette (1 902). In 1935, the US Post Office moved from its original location to what is now known as Main Street in Mountain Home. The town continued to grow with increasingly more businesses opening up until it reached its current population size of over 2,000 people in 2006.
