During World War I, Mountain Home became an important munitions producing location due to its proximity to Spokane County munitions factories. In 1918-1919, the town was also hit hard by influenza pandemic which caused a number of deaths and illness among both locals and soldiers stationed nearby. In 1941, during World War II, Mountain Home became one of several towns located along the Spokane River Valley as part of Operation Downfall (the invasion of Japan). As war continued to rage around the world, ammunition production increased significantly within Snake River Arsenal in Wenatchee until it closed in 1945 due to economic reasons. However, despite this closure - or perhaps because of it - Ammunition Factory #1 reopened soon afterwards as part of an effort led by then Mayor Harry Hildreth (now long gone) to revive downtown businesses that had failed during wartime years when trade centers were scarce or non-existent due to all-out conflict around the country. Today’s population has ballooned over 2,000 since 2001 as a result of new construction efforts associated with Idaho’s statewide growth spurt (along with burgeoning economies across most Western states). Mountain Home is a small town in the Webster County seat of Mountain Home, Idaho. The population was 1,746 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Boise Valley Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to live in what is now Mountain Home were Native Americans who used the area for hunting and fishing. In 1868, Brigham Young founded the Mormons' Salt Lake City congregation here and established a farm called Springdale on what is now Main Street. In 1871, Isaac Gooding began construction on what became known as Gooding's Mill which soon became one of Idaho's first cotton mills. The mill closed in 1916 but it left an important legacy in Mountain Home with its buildings still standing today. In 1907, Mountain Home incorporated as a village and named it after President James K. Polk who had been born there in 1847. The following year saw another milestone when the first post office opened with mail service coming through Springdale farmhouse until 1915 when permanent mail service arrived from Boise via State Highway 95A. Throughout much of its history, Mountain Home has been a bedroom community for workers living near Boise or other metropolitan areas such as Nampa or Eagle River. However, over time more and more residents have chosen to move closer to their jobs while maintaining close ties to their hometowns through social events and activities including annual pancake breakfast Sundays at First United Methodist Church located on Main Street where members can enjoy pancakes cooked by participants from around the community before attending services at 9:00am sharp followed by local discussion surrounding current events taking place that day at nearby Parkview Baptist Church across from IMAX theater complex followed by dinner served at home under roof using donated food items provided by church members/families during Lent season preceding Easter weekend).
