Mountain Home, Idaho is home to the world’s only permanently inhabited ammunition factory. The first of its kind in the United States, this factory manufactured and distributed artillery rounds for the Union and Confederate armies during the American Civil War. Today, Mountain Home’s Ammunition Factory remains a popular tourist destination for visitors interested in history and munitions. The ammunition factory was built on land that had been long used by the residents of Mountain Home as an agricultural district. In 1881, Mayor George A. Smith donated land to the city of Mountain Home in order to build a permanent school and fire station. The school was completed in 1884 and soon became known as “Mountain Home High School”. In 1889, when incorporation of Mountain Home as a city occurred, it became necessary to establish a police department which would patrol town limits and handle various crimes within the municipality. Mayor Smith appointed John Hinton as the first Police Chief. When World War I began, production at the Ammunition Factory increased because demand for artillery rounds far outstripped supply from Europe. The war resulted in many casualties including many civilian fatalities who were killed while working at or near the plant. Mountain Home is a small town in Idaho located on the border of Oregon and Nevada. It was founded in 1887 by John C. Fremont, who made it his winter home while exploring the area. The town quickly became a center for cattle ranching and mining, and today it remains an important agricultural community. The first settler in Mountain Home was George Hanks, who arrived in 1885. He built a log cabin on the hill that now stands in town. Hanks was the first white person to live within what is now Mountain Home County. The first post office was established at Mountain Home in 1886, and early settlers used the name "Fremont" because it had been given to them by General John C. Fremont. Mountain Home initially relied on Native American assistance for its food supply, but over time this began to change as more settlers arrived and started farms of their own. In 1907, when Congress passed the Indian Appropriations Act, which authorized funds for the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Mountain Home became one of six towns within Idaho designated as "Indian reservations." This gave rise to much criticism from local residents who saw this as another way for America's ancient Native Americans to get control over their land without any representation or input from civilians. Despite these objections, Mountain Home continued to grow slowly until World War II when its population exploded due to troops stationed there during the warring nations' conflict (USA vs Japan). As result, many businesses were closure or moved away due to scarce space; however, some continue operations today such as The Post Office store which has been open since 1955. In 1957, Mountainhome lost its status as an Iowan reservation after statehood was granted to both Idaho and Nevada; however, it still retains its designation as an agricultural community with traditional livestock husbandry practices
The first permanent European settlement in what is now Mountain Home, Idaho was made by the Davidians in 1847. The town was named after General David Johnston, an American general who fought in the Mexican-American War and the Civil War.
