Moscow is a small town in the Boise Valley, Idaho. It is located on State Route 11, about 20 miles east of Boise and 50 miles north of Moscow. The population was 1,017 at the 2010 census. The first Russian immigrants to Moscow were Cossacks who arrived in 1881. They built a log cabin on the edge of town and named it after their native village, Chernigov (now Chelyabinsk). In 1903, the Russian government granted ownership of land to Russian-American Company for development into an agricultural Hub with artificial irrigation systems and housing for settlers. In 1907, when Russia defaulted on its debt payments, a group of business magnates led by Jesse Latham founded what became known as the Idaho Agricultural Land Company to purchase land in eastern Idaho and upstate New York that had been parceled out to Russians as part of tsarist concessions. By 1912, Latham had purchased over 4 million acres (18 km2) including much of present-day Moscow. The company began building farms using convict labor – initially underpaid but eventually very profitable because they could operate without fear of being deported back to Russia if they failed to meet production quotas set by management. In 1920–21, during World War I, Moscow was bombed by American airmen while the city was still in flames from previous years' bombings; this caused some damage but no casualties due to lack of medical supplies then available inside Russia at that time. Post-war growth slowed until 1949 when Soviet leaders decidedMoscow should become yet another satellite city within the USSR following secret plans called " urbanization policies". This spurred construction activity which peaked between 1960 and 1970 with an estimated population increase from 930 residents per square mile (300 per km2) to 2,500 residents per square mile (1,000 per km2). Many new apartment buildings were constructed outside downtown due to scarce space inside the city limits even though many businesses had closed down since 1953 due to pervasive economic sanctions placed upon Russia by United States president Dwight D Eisenhower following Stalin's death in 1952
