Gun cleaning in Moscow, Idaho is a centuries-old tradition. Gunsmiths and women have traditionally cleaned firearms for generations, using both natural and artificial means to keep them functioning properly. One of the earliest references to gun cleaning was found in 1687 when Capt. John Smith wrote about the use of “a brush made of a piece of pine or other hardwood, with two or four feathers stuck into it, which being set on one end of a long stick, were used to clean the barrel” (Fletcher). In 1892, Leland Stanford Jr., owner and operator of The Paddock Hotel in Reno Nevada began providing gun services to guests. At that time guns were often left uncleaned andneeded occasional cleaning and lubrication. Guns at The Paddock Hotel were also kept locked up in case any intruder decided to steal them. In 1907, Russian author Leo Tolstoy wrote an essay called “On Firearms” discussing the importance of firearms in Russian culture. In that essay Tolstoy comments on how firearms are essential for self-defense and protection: It is true that there are now too many guns on earth; but it is not because people have become more wicked than ever before; rather it is because weapons have come into universal use throughout society as part of our civil defense system...guns should never be abolished completely – they should be used sparingly but always protectively…the elimination or reduction of arms will only lead us closer to barbarism (Tolstoy 7). Boris Yeltsin agreed with Tolstoy’s idea that firearms must be used responsibly within their traditional context: We need not reduce our arsenals overnight but we must take account calmly and rationally what this measure would entail...gun confiscations would only mean the start of another stage where human beings lose their reason for living (Yeltsin 2). Today, Moscow'sgun cleaning history can still be seen through its traditions such as keeping handguns locked up during daylight hours so no one can steal them from your room while you're asleep or using a variety stainless steel cleaners specifically designed for firearm care (Logan). Throughout history different methods have been used for gun cleaning including soaking newspapers in salt water then placing them over the weapon(Krueger), rubbing olive oil over the metal(Moses)and burning leaves over an open fire.(Reed) .

The gun cleaning process begins with the removal of all cleaning materials, which can be accomplished by using a plunger to suction onto the chamber floor and pulling until all the ingredients are dislodged. Once all the cleaning material has been removed, it is necessary to rinsing the barrel and breech area with cold water and then dry them off. Finally, it is necessary to lubricate any moving parts with a light oil such as WD-40 or kerosene.

Gun cleaning history is a long and complex topic. It can be difficult to determine exactly when specific firearms were first cleaned, and how often. Additionally, it is not always clear which firearms were specifically used for gun cleaning, or how these guns became so clean. There are several references to gun cleaning in various journals and books from the 1700s onwards. One reference from 1796 in the "British Journal of Medicine" refers to a “Gentleman’s Gun Cleaning Kit” that was created by Dr John Lubbock of London. The kit included a soft brush, soap, water and alcohol solution, as well as instructions on how to clean rifles and pistols. In 1827 an article titled “A New Way of Cleaning Firearms” was published in "The Edinburgh Review". These methods have remained popular over time because they provide effective removal of dirt, oil and other contaminants from firearms。 However, there are some problems associated with these methods such as difficulty removing stubborn objects such as fingerprints or lipstick spots; however this usually resolves itself with practice.).
