The Great Depression hit Meridian hard in 1937; many families lost their jobs and were forced to seek food assistance from government programs or sell their homes to pay for basic needs like food and shelter. However, despite difficult times, many residents continued to celebrate community spirit through things like music concerts or picnics outdoors; they also worked together to develop civic landmarks such as City Hall or the first municipally run grocery store in America called Joes Grocery Store (later renamed IGA). In 1941, after World War II ended with Japan's surrender, many Japanese citizens who had remained in America decided that they wanted nothing to do with Japan anymore - instead they chose to move back into American soil where they could be productive members of society. This migration led to increased demand for housing in towns such as Meridian which saw high levels of development between 1945-1955 due largely to newly available federal funds earmarked for post-war reconstruction projects throughout the region including Central Idaho which included Meridian". During this time period there was also significant growth within downtown Meridian itself with construction beginign on what is now known as the Mayor's Office Building (now known as City Hall) which went up in 1951 followed by other buildings such as Civic Auditorium (now home To The Arts) in 1956 which helped define downtown Meridian during this time period along with numerous shopping centers being built across Central Idaho during this time period including Mervyn's Drugs located just east of downtown on State Street before becoming Macy's Department Store later merged into Macy's Incorporated in 1987).
