In 1881, Meridian was the site of a territorial governmenttown established by the US in response to the Boise War. The town was named for General James Holman and its first postmaster, John A. Dickson. The population of the town only grew to a handful in its early years, but it soon became an important center for trade and transportation on the Snake River region. In 1906, Meridian was renamed as Holmstedt after Major-General Alfred D. Holmstedt, commander of US forces in Afghanistan during World War I. The city quickly developed into a major node in Idaho's natural commerce corridor and served as an important cultural center for both Native American and Anglo-American settlers alike. Meridian experienced significant growth during the late 19th century and early 20th century due to its location at the headwaters of two major rivers—the Snake River and Boise River—and its status as a key commercial hub on these waterways. The city reached peak development around 1900 when it boasted over 100 businesses and 1,500 residents; however, by 1920s growth had slowed down due to increased competition from other nearby towns along both rivers. As a result of this decline in development, Meridian saw a significant increase in crime rates throughout the 1920s and 1930s which led to some residents moving out of their downtown area towards more safe neighborhoods outside of town. Despite these challenges, Meridian continued to experience steady growth until World War II when it completely fell within Japanese control following their Invasion of Russia on December 13th 1941). Meridian is a census-designated place in the Yakima Valley of north-central Washington. The population was 2,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wenatchee–Douglas County, Washington Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settlers in what would become Meridian were men from Oregon who arrived in 1859 and homesteaded on the Black Butte River. The town began as a trading post on the east side of the Butte and grew rapidly due to its location, good soil, and access to high water crossings for transportation and irrigation. By 1882, Meridian had a hotel, grocery store, schoolhouse, Masonic Lodge No. 1 (later known as First Presbyterian Church), and two churches: oneMethodist and one Baptist. In 1886, Meridian became an incorporated city with its own mayor and court system; it consolidated with Yakima in 1907 to form Wenatchee–Douglas County. In 1954, when Interstate 5 was built through Yakima Valley, merchants along I-5 came up with an idea to name their community after explorer George Bassett Waterman – alternatively called "Waterman City". Ultimately they chosen "Meridian" because it sounded like a place people would want to visit either during summertime or if they lost something during wintertime while traveling through the area. The population has grown steadily over recent decades; by 2000 it had reached 3,000 residents within walking distance of downtown Boise or Bellingham Airport. In 1868, through trade with Russian traders, Mormons received a shipment of goods that included a millinery shop and schoolhouse. This early incarnation of Meridian was known as Commerce City because it served as a commercial center for the surrounding area. In 1876, Brigham Young requested that all church members move to Fillmore County so that he could establish an uberalliance with other Mormon groups across America. This led to the relocation of many members of the fortieth ward (a sect within Mormonism) to Meridian along with their belongings on April 6th,. Throughout its history, Meridian has seen various waves of immigration: American Indians; Chinese immigrants; and European settlers. During World War II, much desire for jobs led to businesses opening up throughout town which helped support wartime growth rates. After war ended in 1945, many residents returned home while others established themselves elsewhere in southeast Idaho or Utah due to lack of available housing options in Meridian at that time. Today, aspects such as agriculture continue to be important components of local economy while also host some popular tourist attractions such as downtownMercury's restored building which houses both a museum about local history (which is open year-round) and three restaurants serving modern cuisine
