Meridian is a city in Idaho and the county seat of Meridian County. The population was 6,811 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Boise River in east-central Idaho. The first permanent settler in what is now Meridian was George Sorensen in 1877. The town was founded as a trading post by early settlers on the nearby Snake River flats, then known as "the Promised Land." earliest maps of Meridian show it as consisting of several small settlements scattered along both banks of the Boise River. In 1881, when the railroad reached Meridian, traders from all over Northwest America gathered at Fort Bridger to buy goods brought downriver by wagons and horses during the Oregon gold Rush. At that point, river transportation became an important factor for people living near where water could be found and accessed by teams or boats. Over time, other settlements were founded around unique natural features like sandbars on either side of the river that made for good fishing spots; these include North Meridian (now part of Hayden), South Meridian (now part of Nampa), and West Meridian (now part of Coeur d'Alene). In 1907, President Theodore Roosevelt created a national park within inch of downtown Meridian – which remains one of its primary attractions today. Today's downtown area was built up largely during World War II as military housing developments were erected here after Pearl Harbor officials decided that Central City would be too dangerous to maintain with its numerous stores and buildings open to enemy firebombing raids nightly during war years. Downtown streets are named after soldiers who died in World War II: Patton Boulevard (namesake of General George Patton), Roberts Avenue (named for Admiral Chester Roberts), etcetera. The rapid growth following World War II led to problems such as overcrowding in some areas but also increased traffic congestion because many businesses only offered weekday hours or had closed forervative reasons like racial integration or prohibitionism; this caused some residents to leave their homes for lack of alternatives if they could find them again soon afterwards outside city limits during peacetime months when business activity was nil due to restrictions placed on building permits from city fathers like Mayor Dodge who felt that more affordable housing should be provided instead . Despite this issue, many people continue to live and work downtown today because there are no other options available close by while still enjoying easy access to shopping malls or hospitals miles away
