Meridian is a small town in Idaho, United States. The population was 2,624 at the 2010 census. It is the smallest incorporated municipality in Idaho and the second-smallest city in the state of Oregon. Meridian was platted on July 1, 1887 as part of a large land sale by A.F. Kane and Company to James Wickersham and others for $4,000. The town name is derived from George Armstrong Custer's Last Stand east of today's Meridian City on November 25, 1876 during the Indian Wars. The first post office in Meridian was established on January 6, 1889 by J.W. Nourse with a mail service to Great Falls and other settlements in eastern Oregon Territory. The two largest landowners were James Wickersham ( grazer) and John Hutton (farmer). In 1907 Wickersham donated 640 acres (2 km²) of his farm near present-day Meridian to help build a new community that would be known as "Meridian". In 1910 construction began on what would become one of Idaho's most famous landmarks: the Star Spangled Banner Monument which stands at the center of town square today receiving national attention each year for its beauty and historical significance. On October 12, 1935 it was designated as an National Historic Landmark along with nearby Coeur d'Alene Lake; both sites are now part of downtown Meridian’s restored district which also includes buildings from early 1900s including Wickersham House dating back to 1888 when it served as home for Congressman William McKinley’s family before they moved into their official Capitol Hill residence later that decade The Amtrak passenger train depot which served Meridian since 1912 has been demolished but its foundation remains visible just south of downtown median
