Meridian is a town in Ada County, Idaho, United States. The population was 2,675 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Boise metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1887 by James W. Merrill and his brother-in-law, Willard Denny. The first post office was established in Meridian on April 12, 1888. The name Meridian comes from the nearby Meridian Hill (an elevation of above mean sea level). In 1907, the City of Boise began to grow rapidly and annex much of what is now Meridian; however, the city never took into account that it would include much of what became known as "the Merrill Triangle". This land included most of what are now downtown Boise and parts of the south side of the river near Black Diamond Mines. Eventually this annexation led to a total loss for city coffers which forced Mayor George Ewing to ask Congress for financial assistance in order to keep Meridian open as a small town when he ran for re-election in 1912. In 1916, vote numbers showed that both Ewing and challenger Harry Hickey were leading in opinion polls but they both lost because word got out about how much money Boise had taken from Meridian during annexation proceedings. After World War I ended with victory by America over Germany and Austria within months of one another (thanks largely to American military power), then new Congressman Hiram Johnson reinstated voting rights back to residents who had been deported or removed during that war while also apologizing for any damage done during its duration ernestly advising residents not to take things too seriously since "government can only do so much". Meridian was founded in 1872 as a small agricultural town on the Snake River. The town quickly became an important transportation and energy center, thanks to its location along the river and its ability to produce irrigation water from springs. Meridian also became known for its large ore deposits, which helped make it a major player in the Boise mining industry. In 1907, Meridian was renamed Caldwell after local rancher John Caldwell. The name change did not improve the town's reputation, and by 1912 it had all but disappeared from the map of Idaho. But things began to change in 1955 when President Dwight Eisenhower announced his plan to develop the area around Boise into a new region called "The West." Across the border in Oregon, residents were already excited about this potential development because it would create new jobs and expand their economy. When Eisenhower unveiled his plan, they wanted to know what kind of progress he had made toward fulfilling that promise. So they came down to Caldwell, collected signatures from enough people to put Measure 7 on the ballot, and asked Eisenhower if he really wanted their towns involved in this huge project. After some back and forth, Eisenhower decided that yes, they should take part – even though most of them didn't really understand what was going on. And so Measure 7 passed with wide approval (though there were some who opposed it). Since then, Meridian has continued to make a big impact on the local community – both through its economic contributions and through its role as a cultural center for eastern Idahoans. In recent years, however, things have started to unravel bit by bit: The population has been dropping steadily since 2000; business values have eroded; home prices have collapsed; and infrastructure is starting to wear out faster than expected. But even though things are tough right now - especially given all that's happening across Idaho - people here remain passionate about their history and their community spirit.
Meridian was founded in 1887 by J.D. Rockefeller and his partners, primarily John D. Rockefeller, Jr. The town's name is derived from the nearby Snake River, which bisects the community's boundaries. In 1907, a post office was established at Meridian and it remained operational until 1959. During that time, the town had a population of just over 100 residents. In 1961, Meridian became an unincorporated community and ceased to exist as a political subdivision within Idaho County.
