Meridian is a small town in the Sawtooth Mountains of southeastern Idaho. It lies on the confluence of the Snake and Salmon Rivers, about 26 miles (41 km) northeast of Boise, the state's capital. The population was 2,630 at the 2010 census. The first permanent white settlers in Meridian were early Mormon pioneers who established a farmstead in what is now downtown Meridian in 1847. The town was founded as a stop on stagecoach routes between Boise and points east. In 1863, when Boise became an independent city, Meridian became its own municipality and continued to serve as its central business district until annexation by Boise in 1925. When it came under federal control during World War II, military authorities built several large munitions plants here including one that produced uranium weapons for America's atomic bomb program. After the war ended, many businesses closed but some remain active such as grocery store operator Bob’s Discount Foods which operates since 1955 inside the former Morrow Meatpacking Plant building on Main Street. A post office opened at Meridian in 1849; it served only local residents until 1861 when it was moved to present-day downtown Meridian and renamed after General David Porter (1819-1889), who commanded Ulysses S. Grant's army during the American Civil War. As part of their effort to build a wagon road across much of southern Oregon they also built a ferry across Clearwater River which they named "Porter Ferry". Porter Ferry ceased operations due to low water levels in 1907 but remains listed on the National Register of Historic Places as part of nearby Clearwater Dam Park Historic District). In 1865 Congress approved construction of Fort Bridger along with four other forts along Oregon Trail main route from Sacramento through Utah Territory into Wyoming Territory; this area now includes parts of both Idaho and Wyoming plus most of eastern Montana including Twin Cities County and most or all of Yellowstone National Park land west of Gardiner Lake). Construction began on Fort Bridger in late 1865 but ran into delays becauseof disagreements over how far north to put the fortifications (the actual site would be located southwest near today's Pocatello). By late November 1865pleted fortifications had been moved north about 10 miles (16 km) due west from where they stood before being reoccupied by Ulysses S. Grant's troops returning from his homecoming parade December 15th 1865 just north pastpresent day Garden City." In 1880 General James Hatton replaced Major John Custer commanding forces defending Fort Bridger against Sioux attack following Indian removal claims made by President Adams; Hatton later achieved fame leading United States forces against Native Americans at Little Bighorn battlefieldsite near Bozeman, Montana In 1886 Governor Isaac Nibley appointed Leland Stanford Sr., president vice chancellor & regent Univided States College Spokane Valley School District No 9 receiving land grant comprising portions now lying within Meridian Township boundaries south side Of US Highway 23 Business And State Line Road thence WEST To point nextTo Post Office
