The town was founded in 1868 by John and Emma Nicholson. It was renamed Lewiston in 1897 after General George Armstrong Custer during the American Civil War to honor him. The first post office in Lewiston opened on July 14, 1868, and remained open until it was closed on November 15, 1870. On October 16, 1898, Lewiston became a city when it incorporated as a result of an act of the legislature approved by Congress. The city had existed as a borough since 1886. They were all sold or closed within a few years of their opening however most are still standing today including Nowlan’s which still sells groceries and souvenirs from its original location across the street from the post office. Lewiston also saw some significant events during its history such as being chosen as the site for both President Gerald Ford’s inauguration ceremonies and his eventual burial there; serving as home to one-time U S Steel plant until it closed down due to automation in 2001; hosting both Special Olympics World Games tournaments between 1996 and 2004; becoming an important transportation hub for small towns in central Idaho; and experiencing rapid growth following fatal flooding that occurred in 2006 which destroyed much of downtown Lewiston but also created new neighborhoods such as East Park which now forms part of downtown Lewiston proper.
Lewiston was founded in 1874 by David S. Lewiston and his brother, James H. Lewiston, as a small agricultural community located on the banks of the Salmon River. The town grew rapidly due to its location near the county seat, Boise, and its access to transportation including an railroad and canal. In 1915, Lewiston became an incorporated city with a population of 508. The city developed a strong local economy through manufacturing and agriculture until the early 21st century when it lost its status as a major cultural center to Boise.
