They found an ideal site on the edge of what is now Lewiston Village: a bend in the Snake River where they could access watermelons and other crops. The town was renamed after Lewiston, Maine, which at the time was one of the most important ports on the Great Lakes. The early settlers were welcoming arrivals who had come looking for opportunities to break new ground and build their lives anew. Many of these immigrants came from eastern Massachusetts and Pennsylvania. Some also brought their families with them as they made their way westward into what is now southwestern Idaho Territory (now part of Oregon). By 1915, there were over 100 residents living in Lewiston proper and more than 50 miles away in surrounding villages such as Salmon Bayou and Cimarron Springs. The first school opened inLewiston Village on January 12th, 1907; it served as both a day-care center for infants and young children as well as an elementary school until 1924 when it became an all-day high school under construction adjacent to present day Middle School Road (now US Highway 95). During prohibition years there were multiple speakeasies dotting every corner called "the dives" These places weren’t raided often bc law enforcement didn’t want anymore trouble then they already had And guess what? That type Of business thrived even without liquor laws! People did whatever they needed TO get drunk legally so yeah... prohibition never really happened here
