Smith and his party stopped for supplies at an Indian band camp about 7 miles northeast of the current town site. The next day, they discovered a warm springs and named it "Lewiston." At that time, Lewiston consisted primarily of log cabins scattered around a small village center with several stores and two hotels/motels on Main Street between First Avenue and Center Street east of what is now Meridian Boulevard. A post office was established at Lewiston on November 15, 1886; it remained in operation until 1963. In 1907, the first oil well was drilled in Butte County; this well eventually produced over $100 million worth of oil royalties for America’s leading companies including ExxonMobil, Shell Oil Company and Texaco Incorporated! In 1909 Lewiston became an incorporated city under state law following passage by both houses of Congress providing for incorporation “when or if desired by either body politic thereof having no other place within its limits where corporations may be erected without special actality” On October 14th 1909 Mayor Wm Fenton proclaimed “An Evening Of Unity And Friendship toast” to all who were gathered together to commemorate Citizenship Day celebrating Union victory over Mexico during the Mexican-American War three days earlier! That evening more than 2200 citizens attended City Hall where Mayor Fenton presented certificates to twenty five people representing various interests: Businessmen George Prentice (President & CEO American Telephone & Telegraph Company), Elisha Beasley (Mayor & Vice President Gaslight Electric Light Company), Mrs Robert Keyes (Mrs William Auld Director Western Railway Passenger Station Co.), Mr James Dickey (Joint Commissioner Post Office Department), Dr John Cramer Superintendent State Normal School at Boise
