Lewiston became an important post-war boomtown due to its location on the route of Interstate 80 and its access to mineral resources. Famed automobile manufacturer Henry Ford designed his first car here in 1936. In recent years, Lewiston has experienced growth as a bedroom community for Boise, ID; however, much of that growth has come at the expense of its traditional downtown district which retains historical significance but has been greatly impaired by development around it. The history of Lewiston begins with farming communities that settled along the Snake River during early 19th century America's westward expansion. One such community was founded by farmers who swam across the river in 1875 after they realized they could not reach their destination from Salmon Arm, Washington via road because that land was reserved for other purposes. They named their new settlement Lewiston after General John A. Logan's forces were victorious over Mexico at Buenavista on November 15th that year while battle raged nearby between American and Mexican troops. When I-80 was built through this area connecting Portland and Seattle, many small towns found themselves struggling to keep up with what had become an increasingly larger cityscape (see also "I-80 And The Making OfLewiston"). However, despite competition from Boise City and other cities located kilometers away or upstream on I-81 (the primary north/south route through central Idaho), Lewiston managed to stay afloat throughout much OF THE 20thCentury thanks largely to two factors: its location on one of Central America's most strategic routes (northwestbound I-80 linked both Portland and Seattle) - making it easy for people coming into town either for work or pleasure - as well as its strong economic performance thanks to burgeoning agricultural production within minutes' walk of any major market or service center (see also "Lewiston And Its Role In Postwar Idaho"). 2nd Factor: Population Growth Despite Rapid Development Nearby & Lack Of Downtown District; Neighborhoods Stay Solid Despite Shifting Demographics

Lewiston is a city in Idaho and the county seat of Butte County. founded in 1884, it was known as a mill town until it became an agricultural center after improvements were made to its water power and irrigation systems in the late 1800s. The population was 17,711 at the 2010 census. Lewiston is located on the Snake River Plain about 30 miles (48 km) east of Boise and about 20 miles (32 km) northeast of Pocatello. It is bordered by Butte County to the south, Slough County to the west, and Clearwater County to the north. The first mention of Lewiston occurs in 1884 when Wm. Crouse said he saw "a number of log homesteads on Mill Creek" which he called "Lewiston". In 1889, A. Hargrave reported seeing "a number of frame houses" near what would become downtown with a storehouse attached and another house being built soon afterwards on what is now Fourth Street. These early settlers were part of several groups that arrived from Oregon during that year's gold rush; some 8 men had traveled there by boat from Portland, Oregon and rafted overland across swollen Snake River canyon. By 1890 most residents had left for other sections of Idaho Territory or for Canada where gold was found that year; only one man remained in Lewiston for more than two years before moving away again. Portland developer John Farragut donated land adjacent to his flour mills on Seventh Avenue S., east of Commercial Street N., for a new town site which would include an assay office, post office, hotel/motel, churches, schools and stores all within walking distance of one another beginning in 1892; this new town name was shortened to Lewiston three years later when mail service began between Boise and Lewiston via horse-drawn coaches running every two hours each way between those towns using side streets instead of Main Street due to cost overruns with construction projects such as Hastings Dam which were also under way at that time. The lumber industry played an important role inLewiston's development throughout its history; many local businesses operated outta doors because there wasn't enough business district inside the city limits proper due to timber thefts by nearby farmers who could sell logs unharmed while storage facilities were built outside city limits behind fence lines housing their livestock! In 1902 Mrsgrace Ketchum established Whatcom Lumber Company Ltd.; she managed operations outta her home until 1906 when she sold it interests including shares in L&N Railway Co.; this company transported logs into & outta town from various mills along 7th Ave SW.(now Park Row NW.), today's Redwood St.(northwest corner Of 6th AveNW.), then upriver past Tooele Dam ontoceptical River below US-2 near present day Anaconda
