In 1865, Lewiston voters passed an ordinance establishing their own school system which would eventually become Lewis Valley School District No. 1 (LVSD1). The first teacher was hired on November 9th 1865 by Mrs Eleanor Laframboise who taught 6th grade with much success until her death on October 5th 1888 due to pneumonia brought about by exposure to dust particles during construction of new streetlights down Main Street just east of present day University Aveqqeur Park
