Lewiston is a town in Idaho, United States. It was founded on August 15, 1903 by the merger of two settlements, Lewiston and Sheridan. The population was 2,521 at the 2010 census. Lewiston is located in southern Idaho along the Snake River. It is bordered to the south by Pocatello and to the north by Fruita. The town straddles what was once a wagon train route that connected Oregon with California. Today's highway serves as a main artery through Lewiston; it runs north-south and crosses several rivers before terminating at US 395 near Gardiner Lake. The first settler in Lewiston were John Swenson and his wife Hannah Mills Swenson who crossed over from Canada on July 31, 1875 while working on an Oregon-bound freight train. They had six children: Charles (1876-1951), Anna (1878-1966), Moody (1880-1957), Lula Maynard (1882-1964), John Swenson II (1885-1971) and Lena Belle Swenson (born 1886). In 1903, when Lewiston merged with Sheridan, it became one of only two towns in Idaho to do so without either village having any voting rights or representation in local government - the other being Coeur d'Alene which took effect later that year following its annexation by Boise City proper. The merger was done due to pressure from various businesses within both settlements who wanted their own town with easy access to transportation and resources they could use commercially. A post office operated in Lewiston from 1903 until 1912; during this time it served primarily residents of Sheridan as well as those living nearby on both sides of the Snake River. In 1916, when Congress passed legislation authorizing organized township formation throughout much of America via grants issued pursuant to the Nationality Act of 1916,Lewiston became one of three towns authorized to form districts under that law -the others being Boise City proper and Twin Falls which did so shortly thereafter. After years of planning and construction work - starting with modest beginnings at just 10 buildings - Lewiston's first district encompassed all or portions of seven villages: Aberdeen/Sheridan/Pocatello/Twin Falls/Aguanilla/Fruita collectively known then as “The Beehive District” because so many settlers had moved into that area since its creation in 1916 –the community reached its current size within only twenty years! Today’s core downtown area has undergone significant redevelopment over the past few decades including new housing developments overlooking downtown square; an expanded shopping mall located adjacent to Interstate 95;and multiple restaurants & cafes lining Main Street between Depot Square & Government Center Blocks –all providing locals & visitors alike with plenty Of opportunity To experience all thatLewiston has to offer!
