Kuna, Idaho is a small town in the Sawtooth Mountains of easternIdaho. It is located about an hour and a half east of Boise and about two hours north of the central valley. As of the 2010 census, Kuna had a population of 194 people. The town was founded in 1885 by settlers who came from northern California. The first post office in Kuna was established in 1886. In 1914, the town became one of six villages within the new Silver Falls Indian Reservation. On July 1, 2015, Kuna incorporated as a city under state law. Kuna was named after Captain John C. Kundera (1819-1892), an American fur trader and explorer who settled at Fort Hall in what is now southeastern Idaho Territory in 1847. The name "Kunda" means "place where spruce trees grow." According to legend, when Captain Kundera discovered gold near present day Boise he called his settlement there "Kunda" because he thought it would be easier for men to find gold than elsewhere on his expedition because there were no mountains between him and the goldfields.

The post served as a base for exploration into nearby areas including today's Coeur d'Alene County and Storey County. In 1883, prospectors looking for rich silver and gold veins in what is now Kuna Canyon discovered theseuggets when mapping out the canyon floor for their wagons during their drive across Snake Valley country searching for silver nuggets to sell back home in America. At that time, there were no roads or bridges connecting these parts of Idaho so wagon trips took weeks instead of days - making this discovery allthe more special! After finding some amazingsilver oreassets around mile marker 209 on US-2 near present day Lewiston (Ft.) Kimball National Wildlife Refuge (now Lewiston) they named their new hometown after King David Harriman II United States Senator from New York state who had been instrumental with helping them find those assets! And so it began...Kunatna Creek became home to one of America’s most significant mining towns! The first Europeans to visit Kuna, Idaho were the Spanish in 1821. The next year, the US government purchased land from the company that had been exploring the area. The ranchos de la Isla de Kuna were developed by Spanish settlers and their descendants. In 1864, a smallpox epidemic hit the region and killed many of the Native Americans who lived there.
