Kuna (pronounced "kuh-nuh") is a small town in Idaho, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Boise–Tahlequah–Anadarko, ID Micropolitan Statistical Area. The Kuna area has been inhabited by Native Americans for over 10,000 years. A Chukchi people village was located hereabouts in 1847 and 1849. In 1862, gold was discovered on the extreme eastern edge of what is now Kuna Lake and prospectors began to arrive in search of the valuable mineral. Mining began soon after and production continued until 1964 when a dam was built upstream to control the watercourse that supplied Kuna with water. Today, there are few remaining buildings from early days except for a post office building which still stands and serves as a community center; it was built in 1886. In 1907, Kuna incorporated as a town under the name "Newcastle". The first mayor was Wm Hodge and it had a total population of 25 residents at that time. In 1912 an electric light system went into operation making Kuna one of the first towns in America to have such technology; however, no oil or gas were found until 1920 when an initial well discovery yielded large quantities of both oil and gas! After World War II ended, many businesses closed down due to low demand for goods exported from Asia during that period; however, some new businesses started up like computer store (1983), hardware store (1984), convenience store (1986), restaurant (1987) & barber shop (1988). By 1990 Census there were only 9 active businesses left while 3% Population growth rates have resulted in more than doubling our current population (~1400) since 2000! Today main industries include construction services ($362 thousand), health care ($430 thousand) & education ($143 thousand). Agriculture remains very important with $5 million being generated annualized providing food for local residents

The population peaked at around 60 in 1945, but has since declined slightly. Today, Kuna is a small town with a population of around 10 residents. Kuna had strong ties to both local businesses and American culture during its early years. Many of the original buildings still stand today including the post office, bank, hotel, grocery store, teachers’ training school and more. Kuna also played an important role in helping spreadU.S.-Canadian relations through its affiliation with Caribou Airport (now owned by Great Western Airlines). Today, Kuna remains a small community that relies heavily on tourism as its primary source of income. Some significant tourist attractions include the museum which displays artifacts from both local history and American culture; as well as several restaurants and bars which offer traditional Karuk cuisine typical of this region
