Idaho Falls is a town in Idaho that was founded by the Lewis and Clark Expedition on July 10, 1847. The town was named after the falls, which are located in the U.S. state of Washington. The expedition's companions were Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, who had been exploring the Great American Desert when they became interested in the Ruby Mountains near present-day Boise, Idaho. They journeyed downriver to what is now known as Watertown (the site of today's Idaho Falls) and then continued their journey upriver to build a basecamp at this location for their next survey of the Great Western Divide. The first permanent settler in Idaho Falls was James Miller, who arrived with his family from Illinois in 1849. He built a cabin on the banks of Snake Creek and opened up a mercantile business in what is now downtown Idaho Falls. By 1851, Miller had imported logs from British Columbia and set about building an sawmill on Snake Creek below Main Street. One year later he erected a larger mill on Bullfrog Gulch opposite where Central Avenue now stands. The mills began production around 1850 and were one of the most important economic engines driving growth throughout central Idaho during its early years; until competition from mining operations introduced new technologies such as blast furnaces and large-scale production techniques that destroyed many mills during the late 1800s. Miller also developed an interest in irrigation systems; he constructed two wells near his house between 1850 and 1861 to supply water to his millrace while he built additional dams upstream for future useage including cattle ranches run by Peterson Brothers ranchers east of town along Bullfrog Gulch between 1861 and 1865). In addition, he served as president of the First National Bank established in 1851 at Main Street south of current-day State Capitol Square; this bank played an important role in financing development east of town along Bullfrog Gulch includinglahouse Road northward into present day White Sands National Monument before closing its doors following bankruptcy within five years (see idahopedia:Bankruptcy)). In 1862, John Atherton moved to central ID from Oregon with his wife Lillie Henson Atherton intending to establish herself permanently among friends she had made there since leaving her father’s home countrymen some time earlier (Atherton originally settled near present day Twinville but abandoned that location shortly thereafter due largely to lack thereof accessible water resources). John Atherton soon met Lillie Henson’s sister Sarah Jane Whitman hereabouts; Sarah Jane soon bore him four children – three girls (Nina Atherton), Anna Belle Whitman (1912–2001),and Susana Lynn Whitman (1914–2005) – all born within two years following their arrival at what would become known as “The Grove” just west of Main Street south of State Capitol Square adjacent to today’s Park Place Apartments complex.)
