It wasn't until 1850 when prospectors discovered gold nearby that Idaho Falls became known as one of America's major mining towns. Mining started in earnest during the 1880s with silver being found near present day Jerome but it wasn't until 1893 when Gold Rush fever hit town causing infrastructure problems such as chiseling roads into hillsides so miners could access fertile ground for digging (which also happened during World War II). However, modern day tourism is based more offHistorical significance than actual gold production which continues today along with several million tourists visiting each year making Idaho Falls one of North America's top tourist destinations
