Idaho Falls, Idaho is a city in Clark County, Idaho, United States. The population was 26,837 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Boise metropolitan area. The falls are a popular tourist destination and contain one of the world's largest waterfalls. The first European to visit the falls was Jedediah Smith in 1814 while on his way to find a route across the Rocky Mountains for Fort Laramie. In 1846, James Wickersham built an cabin here and named it after his mentor and friend John C. Fremont - who had founded Boise in 1847 as an agricultural town near what is now downtown Boise. The name may have been inspired by nearby Salmon Arm which had similar looking rocks called "falls". In 1862, Ironfounder George Stephenson built a mill on the wash below the falls for producing flour for local markets. The mill was destroyed by fire in 1865 but rebuilding began immediately and continued until 1888 when production ended due to low demand from farmers in California that were growing wheat instead of cotton or other crops needed for flour production. However, some residents still lived and worked at the mill until it closed down permanently in 1951 due to competition from more reliable mills located farther away in Idaho City and Lewiston (nowMoscow). A post office called Hazard opened on May 8th 1863 under license from Cincinnati (then Ohio) with Aide Post No.; 6; 2 miles ENE of Idaho Falls on Umatilla River; thence SW 5½ miles over road bridge across river & up stream 4 1/2 miles to former site of hazard post [now known as] IDAHO FALLS post office which remained open 6 months only
The first white person to set foot in Idaho Falls, Idaho was Lewis and Clark on July 14, 1805. The town of Lewiston was founded by Englishman George Simpson in 1836 as a trading post on the Snake River. A ferry service connected the two towns until 1861 when the first bridge was built over the river. In 1865, Lewiston became an incorporated city and in 1896 its name changed to Idaho Falls. The university which now stands on campus was founded in 1889 and is one of America's oldest universities.
