Idaho Falls is a city in Clark County, Idaho, United States. The population was 14,276 at the 2010 census. The first settlement in what is now Idaho Falls was made by the Ute people in 1868. The town sprang up around the discovery of gold on the nearby Snake River and was built by settlers who platted and named their towns after places such as Niagara Falls, British Columbia, and Niagara-on-the-Lake. By 1907, most of what is now Idaho Falls had been developed. In 1912, the City Council approved plans to create a civic fountain located near downtown that would be fed by water from the Grand Canyon National Park. Construction began in 1913 but stopped due to lack of funds. The fountain finally opened in 1927 and continues to serve as a symbol of local boosterism today. The city's rich history can be traced back to its incorporation as an agricultural town on November 3, 1887. At that time it consisted of just two houses and three businesses—a grocery store, a flour mill, and a blacksmith shop—across from where Main Street now intersects North Seventh Street; east of South Seventh Street lived pioneer John Gentry and his family while west side residents included James Hoyle (1802-1893), Jonas Sitton (1805-1892), David Dibble (1784-1869), Samuel Lewis (1799-1876) and Solomon Bacheller (1800-1878). Much like many other small towns during those days before refrigeration arrived for general use and transportation became easier with railroads coming through townspeople set about building stores with merchandising capabilities including hardware supplies at one corner store until services such as plumbing turned into fulltime careers with several men running daycare centers on opposite corners along First Avenue until traveling merchants could open their own stores four blocks away on Third Avenue making social gatherings more convenient for everyone involved; ice cream parlors being an occasional addition until dry goods superseded them years later when convenience became available within minutes’ walk or less if there were no sidewalks available during bad weather conditions when roads were impassable due to snow drifts high enough above ground level even During prohibition era bootlegging operations took place under cover of darkness outbuildings becoming known as “bootleggers” Rowdy rumbles accompanying Prohibition Era alcohol sales starting late night hours lasting until early morning became so prevalent some customers would line up outside entire stores windows shouting Booze! All this activity taking place without music or sound equipment which only added excitement no one realized how dangerous it actually was
The first white people to set foot in what is now Idaho Falls, or even the area that includes present-day Idaho Falls, were wagon rangers led by Captain George Armstrong during the 1847 Oregon Trail Expedition. The first permanent settler in what is now Idaho Falls was James Bridger, who built a cabin on the edge of the falls in 1859. The town of Twin Falls, founded by Bridger, began to grow around him and soon became the leading commercial center in the region. In 1875, John Wesley Powell arrived at Salmon River and named it after himself – meaning “canyon of rivers” – in order to attract more settlers to his fledgling state of Utah. By 1882, however, most of the eastern half of Twin Falls had burned down due to a series of severe floods that year. With no other choice but to abandon his settlement there, Bridger relocated his family back westward upriver along the Snake River until they finally reached their old home near Blackfoot City in 1890.
