When the first Americans arrived in what is now Idaho Falls in 1868, they were greeted by a hostile environment. The local Native Americans had watched as white men and their animals wandered around their territory, looting and burning anything they could find. The American settlers didn't take kindly to this behavior, so they decided to form an alliance with the local group of Indians known as the Snake River band. This arrangement allowed for trade between the groups and helped avoid anyanmar conflict. In 1872, American pioneer Ladd Sayers discovered gold near Gold Beach on the Snake River. With this new discovery, things began to change for the better for the people of Idaho Falls. People could finally afford to build homes and businesses, and businesspeople started investing in agriculture instead of just prospecting for gold. The earliest ammunition in this area was shot at the now demolished Fort Hall Indian School in 1859. This ammo was used by American Indian scouts to shoot arrows during testing of rifle rounds. In 1865, a company of militiamen from the 2nd Cavalry Regiment fired on Native Americans living east of Boise while they were raiding wagon trains passing through the region. This resulted in some injuries and one dead Indian. The next year, contract gunners for US Army Captain George Armstrong's 1st Infantry Regiment began firing black powder cannons into a canyon near present-day Cedar City to test their new weapon system known as "The Missouri". These cannons had been designed by Armstrong himself and were able to fire up to 100 round/minute with ease. After eight years of use, Captains John Cotten and Samuel Moulton replaced these cannons with white powder cannon in 1871. In 1881, local prospector John Dickey discovered silver teeth within 10 miles of whereconfigured his claim near present day Payette County. He circulated a petition throughout the community for an expedition to find more silver mine sites but no one wanted to invest money in such an venture without evidence that there was valuable silver located nearby. Dickey organized a group of men including his brother-in-law Jack Northrup and Tom Ladds who traveled out into Payette County on July 21st1881 after hearing rumors about large quantities of silver being found northward along Snake River valley. They reached their destination three days later and reported finding over 350 pounds (190 kg)ofsilver hidden beneath numerous rocks at an elevation above 4000 ft (1350 m). A man named James Eastman claimed part ownership of this property after receiving payment for its discovery from Dickey; however it reverted back to Dickey upon Eastman's death in 1893. Dickey continued searching forilver until he died at age 82 on October 16th 1912 while prospecting near Twin Buttes National Monument northwest of Boise Airport.. His tombstone still stands today adjacent to mile marker 306 on State Route 20A close to today's town site called Westmoreland . It is possible that his remains may behidden within payette county’s old gold mine workings which remain unexplored today
