Hayden is located in the Snake River Valley, about an hour's drive from Idaho Springs. Hayden was founded in 1877 by James P. Hayden and his partner John Ritchie, who formed a small ranching business. The town developed around the Hayden Ranch and other businesses in the early years of its existence. In 1907, the Hayden Ranch was sold to Ivan H. Wells, who used it as a grazing ground for his horses and cattle. After Wells death in 1912, the ranch passed through various hands until it was acquired by George Custer in 1916. Custer used it as a winter quarters for troops during World War I and later donated it to the government for use as a military base. The town slowly grew back up around the base until World War II when it became an important transportation hub due to its location on Highway 26 between Boise and Whittington. After the war ended, most of the civilian population moved out of Hayden but some continued to live there throughout the 1970s and 1980s as part of what is now known as "The Gold Rush Years."
