Hayden was founded in 1865 by George Fenton and his wife, Rachel. The town was named after General George Armstrong Custer who fought in the Mexican-American War. Hayden is a small but growing community located in southeastern Idaho along the Snake River. The community is known for its irrigated agriculture and its unique history. The first settlers to Hayden were farmers from Illinois who arrived in 1865. They started a farm on the east side of the Snake River where they grew corn, wheat, barley, potatoes, and other vegetables. In 1868, another group of Illinois farmers arrived and began farming on the west side of the river. They raised horses and cattle and took their produce to market. By 1870, most of the original settlers had left Hayden for other parts of Idaho or Kansas City, Missouri. In 1865, George Fenton came to Hayden with his family to start a new life in what was then an remote corner of southeastern Idaho Territory (now part of Utah). He set up a homestead on land that he had bought from Chief Joseph when he led an attack against Ute demand for more food from pioneers living near the confluence of the Colorado and Snake rivers. The Fentons built their own cabin outposts on high rocks overlooking Clearwater Creek which became known as “Fenton’s Ferry” because it served as a crossing point for travelers traveling between Clearwater Lake on one side of the creek and Hayden Valley onthe other side. For many years this site served as home base for both families until they relocated to their present location in 1951 when Highway 95 passed through town center making it easier to reach by car than ever before! Hayden has played an important role in local history since its founding days! It has been called “the rust belt” due to its lack of industry but also because it has produced someof Idaho’s most famous citizens including Governor Frank Church (1948-1951), former Congressman Don Young (1973-1981), Mayor Wayne Allard (1989-1999), Rex Tillerson (secretary general under President Donald Trump)and current Mayor Barbara Jean Stoner (2017-present)! In addition to its physical presence – thanks to its irrigated agriculture – Hayden also boasts significant intangible assets such as its rich cultural heritage which includes examples from early American pioneer culture such as buffalo hunting trips conducted over Clearwater Creek by settlers during winter months!
