He had always been interested in American history, particularly Indian history and had started collecting items related to that subject while living near Pocatello, Idaho Territory (now Mukilteo, Washington). In 1907 when he purchased 640 acres of land on which he built his house now known as The Colonel's Housescapegeneral Marshall moved into it on July 4th 1908 and lived there until his death just two months later on October 15th 1908 at the age of 71 years old

Hayden, Idaho is a small town in the Salmon River Valley of central Idaho. The population was 1,528 at the 2010 census. Hayden is located on the southern edge of the Sawtooth National Park and is adjacent to the towns of Ketchum and Twin Falls. It has been part of the United States since 1959. The first Europeans to visit Hayden were fur traders who came through in 1842 along what is now I-15. In 1875, George Washington Custer passed through on his way from Fort Bridger to Cache Valley and stopped at Hayden for lunch before continuing on his way. The first store in Hayden was founded by A.J. Dalbey in 1886. From 1902 until 1933, it was called Twin Falls because both towns were located near where the river divided into two branches known as Twin Buttes. In 1909, residents of Twin Falls petitioned for incorporation as Hayden because they felt their community had more needs than those served by either town. On November 3, 1909, incorporation papers were filed with the county clerk’s office and named Hayden after Samuel Purdy Hayes, an executive committee member of the First National Bank of Boise (later HSBC). At that time only rural areas could be incorporated so this was an important step forward for local self-government; it remains an integral part of American culture today. With a population just over 1,000 in 1930, growth started to slow down due to World War II and other wartime factors such as allocating land for military installations or post offices. The population increased slowly until 1980 when it reached 2,500 due largely to births within Hayden itself rather than outside its borders.“Hayden Pioneers: Their History And Legacy” Thereafter growth accelerated again as people began moving into surrounding communities including Ketchum and Twin Falls which had also become cities during that time. Today there are over 10,000 people living in Hayden with most residing within its boundaries. As one would expect given its size and location within central Idaho history has been rich with experiences that have shaped everyone who lives here today.

The first post office was established in 1907 and the first store opened in 1909. In 1916, the Hayden brothers built a log schoolhouse that became the nucleus of the present day town. The town was renamed Hayden in 1930 following an act of Congress.
