The fort was destroyed by Indian forces in 1876 but greatly aided Custer's operations during that conflict by providing cover from artillery fire while he conducted raids against Native Americans living near Fort Bridger on the Clearwater River

In addition, several major landmarks were constructed during this time including the first indoor pool in western United States (in 1951), the first gas station in Idaho (in 1954), and downtown’s original five blocks of brick buildings (1956). This period also saw significant advances withinHayden society – such as women gaining suffrage in 1959, racial integrationist changes taking place throughout western America during the 1960s (most notably at Boise State University),and establishment of what is now known as “the Arts District” on Main Street where artists could purchase studio space and paint or sculpture along with poetry readings and concerts.(See image below) During these years there were also some controversial moments; most notably when Mayor John Wehner agreed to sell his Holden house to developer Harry Wolk for $3 million dollars just months before city officials learned they would have to demolish it due to fire code violations!!!!!!!!!!(see story below) However despite these challenges, many aspects of life continue unchanged today – most noticeably volunteerism which has been integral into day-to-day life since inception!
