A post office was founded here in 1857 and remained in operation until 1907. Hayden's early growth was due to its location as a key wagon stop on the stagecoach route between Boise and Salt Lake City. In 1908, Haydn Horseman became one of the first settlers in Hayden when he moved from southern Utah with his family. Today, Hayden is home to many businesses and institutions that have helped make it an important community throughout its history: The Hayden Museum of History & Art (founded in 1978), the Hayden Library (founded in 1984), and Valley View High School (established in 1968). Hayden has several significant landmarks: Iron Mountain (), which rises to 6,642 feet (1,936 m) above sea level; Northwest Fork () of the Snake River (); and Springdale ().
