In 1902, a group of businessmen named John Dickson and Wm. Hildebrandt purchased land northwest of Hayden and began developing it into a town called Hayden Mills. They erected a few wooden buildings and started selling fire arms including rifles, shotguns, pistols, revolvers and other firearms. In 1907, they built a larger brick building which served as their market center for all their products until 1958 when they sold their business to The Grouse Shop Inc., who continued to operate it until 1986 when it was closed down by the City of Hayden for economic reasons. The city of Hayden acquired the property from The Grouse Shop Inc., which demolished the building in order to make way for new development. Today, you can find several deteriorated structures onsite that were once part of the town's arsenal—one dating back to 1915 is still used as storage space for local businesses. Hayden post office opened on July 3, 1875 and continued operation until its closure on October 24, 1976 under then-President Gerald Ford due to budget cuts related to the Vietnam War era. In 1984, a state park was created within the limits of Hayden State Park as part of efforts by then-Governor Vail to increase tourism in the Sawtooth Mountains region during that decade while also promoting education and outdoor activity opportunities for all citizens through public lands management policies statewide at that time.
