In 1876 Jens Rasmussen started fur trading at Natrona Rapids opposite today's Hansen Dam bridge across the Snake River for which he received considerable profits until 1881 when gold discoveries at nearby Lander led him to abandon fur trading in favor thereof fulltime operations at Natrona Landing where he continued operations until 1896 when he sold out to James Wickersham who renamed it Gardiner after himself one year later in 1897 rich deposits were discovered at Silvertip Creek southwest cornerof Gardiner & Payette Counties adjoining what became today's Garden City Limits
