The history of Garden City begins with Andrew Johnson’s decision to settle in what would become Idaho back when it was still part of Mexico. He arrived at Fort Hall on July 4, 1858, just days before Oregon became a state and Indian Territory was created following the Mexican-American War. In his memoirs, President Ulysses S. Grant recalled how Johnson saw “a great future for this little portion of America [that] lay so near our Canadian boundary…. I begged him not to wait too long; we could start at once if we were sure that no force could stop us from reaching our destination”[1]. Johnson quickly realized that he didn’t have enough land to support a large population and decided against settling permanently outside Mexico proper – instead he traveled eastward through Nebraska into Dakota Territory where he met Native Americans who showed him around some potential sites for settlement.[2] On October 15th, 1858, Johnson formalized his intent tosettle in what would become Garden City by issuing a proclamation calling for towns or villages “to be erected within convenient distance one from another upon fertile lands lying within such sale or purchase made by me under my directions….”[3] That same day construction began on what would eventually become downtown Garden City – a wooden plank bridge across the Snake River connecting two adjoining parcels known as southerly Lot No 3 and northerly Lot No 2.[4] By 1860, only about 350 people lived inside present-day Garden City limits; most residents either worked outside or farmed nearby.[5] However, business remained brisk thanks largely to local manufacturers such as Prentice Hartsel & Company which built steamboats used extensively along the Snake River[6]. Harry Aiken opened his general store on Main Street in 1862,[7] followed by Wm Hite & Sons grocery store on State Street soon thereafter[8]; both stores were key players local businesses continued flourished despite difficult times caused by currency depreciation during Kansas Gold Rush era[9]. With few other options available for agricultural production during these days there wasn’t much incentive for farmers/farmers associations like those which later developed throughout eastern United States during similar timespan.[10][11][12][13][14][15][/16][/17][/18][/19][/20][/21][/22]:
