However, over time, the shop grew and began making more money. In 1916, they opened up a second location on 15th Avenue and Park Row. This location became known as “The Armory” and continued serving local residents until it closed down in 1984. In 1980, the town had only 350 residents and it officially ceased to exist as an incorporated municipality two years later. Today, there are no resident buildings or businesses remaining from when Garden City was an active community. However, several remnants of its past can be found around the town center; for example, the remains of a local chicken coop dating back to 1907 and a garden that served as the main square in Garden City until 1951.
Garden City is located in the Boise Valley, about an hour's drive from Idaho Springs. It was founded on October 15, 1892 by J.F. Goodrich and his brother-in-law W.H. Sibley as a small agricultural community with a population of just seven people. The town grew rapidly after it became known for its produce, especially potatoes, eggs and chickens. In 1905, Garden City acquired its first post office and soon began to develop into a busy commercial center with a variety of businesses including grocery stores, banks and cigar factories. In 1911, Garden City incorporated as a city and quickly began to grow even more due to the addition of new streets, churches and other civic amenities. By 1925, Garden City had reached its peak population with around 20,000 residents; however, during World War II the town was largely abandoned as troops moved in to fight in Europe. However, when the war ended Garden City slowly resumed its growth; by 1950 it had surpassed 30,000 residents again and continued to increase through the years until its annexation by Boise in 1978."
