Eagle, Idaho is a town in Eastern Idaho that was founded by early Mormon settlers in 1847. The first recorded sighting of an American eagle in Eagle occurred on July 17, 1848 when George A. Smith observed one while driving his wagon from Fort Hall to Salmon Falls. In 1853, Philo Parsons saw an eagle for the first time while hunting near Eagleton. In 1875, Starrett & Sons opened a lumberyard and mill in Eagle which soon became one of the most important commercial centers on the eastern edge of the Great Plains. The mill produced more than $1 million worth of lumber each year during its heyday. The mills closed down in 1928 but are still remembered today thanks to their contributions to local economic development and cultural history.
