Eagle, Idaho is a small town in southern Idaho. It was founded in 1889 by the Mormon pioneers working on the Oregon Trail. The town's name comes from an eagle that flew over the town on its first day of settlement. The name also inspired the creation of the Eagle County Courthouse, which stands today in downtown Eagle. The first residents of Eagle were members of the Latter Day Saint church who had traveled through Utah and Nevada before reaching Oregon. They established a campground and a store near present-day Garden City to provide for their own needs and to trade with other settlers coming down the trail. In 1893, Brigham Young assigned Jerald Crayton as captain of what would become known as Company H of the First Battalion (later shortened to Company G) of The Utah Volunteer Infantry Regiment under general George A. Smith. Captain Crayton decided to establish a Post at Eagle because he saw it as an important stop on the trail for supplies and reinforcements going into battle against Native Americans living along the route. In 1898, after battles fought at Nez Perce Canyon and Little Bighorn Valley, General Smith ordered all troops eastward into Wyoming Territory to help quench public anger over perceived injustices committed during those campaigns. Captain Crayton's company was among those ordered southward, arriving at Eagle about December 1st. There they set up shop in a log cabin erected by Major Edward Ewing two miles north ofpresent-day downtown Eagle Captain Crayton soon found himself responsible for organizing his unit into barracks rather than just giving them out gratis like other companies did throughoutUtah Territory He also served as battalion commander during 1899–1900 campaign against Alaska Natives Captain Crayton's battalion participated in November 1901 attack that resulted in Battle Of White Sands National Monument After this victory, President Theodore Roosevelt named Captain Crayton Commander Fifth Brigade Army Corps stationed at Fort Douglas fiasco called "Red Cloud" Campaign Also Known As "Fighting For Keeps" Captain Jerald Cyrpton was posthumously awarded Congressional Medal Of Honor
