Caldwell was founded in 1865 by John Atwater and named for his father, General James Caldwell. The city was incorporated in 1879. It became a full-time dry town in 1907. As of the 2010 census, the population was 20,471.

The community was named for General Edmund Caldwell who served as governor of Idaho from 1907 to 1909 and as U.S. Ambassador to Russia from 1911 to 1913. Caldwell was founded by Mormon settlers in 1868 and became a town in 1893. The first store opened in 1892 and the first school was built in 1895. In 1905, Caldwell became the county seat of Ada County when that county was created from parts of Custer County. The original courthouse burned down in 1916 but it was rebuilt and used until 1948 when it also burned down again. In 1929, Caldwell incorporated as a city and has been its own municipal government ever since. Caldwell offers a variety of businesses including restaurants, stores, banks, health clinics, schools, churches and an airport which serves the surrounding communities of Boise and Skyway Heights. Caldwell was founded in 1907 by Edwin Caldwell and his wife, Florence. The city was named for Edwin Caldwell, a member of the Idaho Territorial Legislature who served as president of the town board. The first post office in Caldwell opened in 1911. In 1917, Caldwell became the county seat of Butte County. The first school in Caldwell was the Butte School District #3 which began operation on October 15th, 1907. On July 1st, 1912, Butte County organized into three divisions; Central Division (Caldwell), South Division (Butte), and East Division (Nampa). The Central Division included all of Butte County with a population of over 10,000 people. South Division included parts of but not all of Butte County with a population under 10,000 people. East Division included easternmost portions of Butte County with a population over 10,000 people and eastmost portions of South Division with a population under 10,000 people. The first mayor of Caldwell was Jules Fenton who served from 1912 to 1916. Other mayors during that time include Halsey Ballou (1916-1920), Charles Atherton (1920-1924), Harry Laughlin (1924-1927), Willard Beamer ( 1927-1930), Edward Condon ( 1930-1932) and John Wightman 1932-1935. In 1933 when Franklin D Roosevelt took office as President he appointed Dudley Moore as the Commissioner for Fairbanks to take care of things there while he ran for Governor in 1934 but lost to Condon by just 291 votes out 513 cast ballots due to fraudulently registered voters being counted twice! In 1935 when FDR took office again he appointed James Byrnes as Commissioner for Fairbanks taking care of things there while he ran for Governor again but lost this time by 853 votes out 3266 cast ballots due to fraudulent voting practices being committed within his own campaign team! He then served as Ambassador to Sweden from 1936 until 1938 where he helped negotiate World War II's end before returning home to run for Governor once more but this time won handily defeating Condon by almost 60%, becoming one term governor! After leaving public service he lived retired at his ranch outside Boise until his death on January 2nd 1978 at age 89 years old!
Caldwell was founded in 1892 by J.D. Caldwell and James B. Caldwell, brothers who had emigrated from England. The town grew rapidly and by 1912 it had a population of over 1,500 people. In 1916 the town became an incorporated municipality with a mayor and four council members. The first post office was opened in Caldwell on December 8, 1892.
