Caldwell was founded in 1872 by the Caldwell family. The town was named for Major General George A. Caldwell, who served in the Union army during the American Civil War. The post office was first established in 1876 and remained in operation until 1912. In 1907, Caldwell became a city and has since grown to include over 60 buildings on 5 acres of land.
